Position Summary

The Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education at Elon University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Education position specializing in reading/literacy education, beginning August 2025.

Elon University's Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education is committed to supporting the development of teachers of reading/literacy grounded in equity. Applicants must be prepared to support teacher candidates preparing for the North Carolina Foundations of Reading test and the Science of Reading principles recently adopted by North Carolina public schools. We welcome candidates who will engage students in critical examination of the Science of Reading to develop comprehensive literacy knowledge and pedagogy that supports learning of all students. We seek candidates with a commitment to working collaboratively with faculty and staff to prepare teacher candidates to primarily teach literacy and literacy-related content to students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates contributing to the climate of diversity, equity and inclusivity that align with our school's mission are encouraged to identify their experiences in their cover letter.

The successful candidate will contribute to the residential-based undergraduate teacher preparation programs and Elon's General Studies (CORE) Curriculum. Responsibilities include teaching K-8 literacy content and pedagogy, children's literature, English language arts methods, and potentially elementary science or social studies methods or other education courses, as well as collaborating with public school partners for practicum and student teacher supervision. There is an opportunity to also teach in the outstanding Master of Education in Innovation program. Candidates must demonstrate a record of, or potential for, scholarly activity, including professional publications and presentations. Additional responsibilities include student mentorship through advising and collaborative undergraduate research and contributions to the life of the department, university, and profession.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. (ABD considered with completion by starting date) from an appropriately accredited institution in reading education, curriculum and instruction, literacy education, literacy studies, teacher education and development, or related field.

  • Successful experience as a practicing K-8 teacher of early elementary, or middle grades literacy or literacy in the content area (e.g., science, social studies).

  • Successful experience teaching adults (i.e. teacher of record or co-teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, clinical teacher supervision experience, leading professional development or other teaching experiences with adults).

  • Record of or potential for scholarly research commensurate with rank.
